Recognise signs of emergency and notifiable animal diseases

Application

This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to recognise the signs of emergency animal diseases (EADs) and conditions in food animals that may be identified while carrying out ante-mortem and post-mortem meat inspection procedures.

The diseases covered must include the following, at a minimum:

  • foot and mouth disease (FMD)
  • bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE)
  • tuberculosis (TB)
  • African swine fever (ASF)
  • contagious pustular dermatitis (also known as scabby mouth)
  • Orf virus
  • Cysticercus bovis
  • anthrax
  • Japanese encephalitis
  • scrapie
  • transmissible gastroenteritis (TGE)
  • lumpy skin disease.

This unit applies to individuals who undertake work related to meat safety, and who carry out ante-mortem inspection of food animals or post-mortem inspection of carcases and meat.

All work must be carried out to comply with workplace procedures, according to state/territory health and safety, food and meat safety regulations, legislation and standards that apply to the workplace.

Legislative and regulatory requirements apply to meat inspection and meat safety and are enforced through national and/or state/territory jurisdictions. Users must check with the relevant regulatory authority before delivery.
